The World Languages department offers courses in Chinese, French, Latin and Spanish for students in upper school. All four of our language programs offer the opportunity for qualified students to enroll in Honors or AP level work starting in their sophomore year.
Each student at Sage Hill School must fulfill two criteria to meet the World Languages requirement for graduation: 1) three years of study and 2) successful completion of Level III of any language. Most of our students continue their course of study through all four years.
World language placement exams for upper school students will be administered on Saturday, April 25 at 8:00 AM. (Note: This placement exam will be followed by the Mathematics placement exam at 9:30 AM.)
Successful completion of the above Google form is the confirmation for your placement test. You will not receive a separate confirmation email from Sage Hill School.
All incoming upper school students must complete the registration form regardless of what level course they are planning to take.
If you feel that your skills exceed the descriptions of Level I or II courses, and are not able to attend the April 25 placement test day, you must email the Department Chair, Dr. Jeffrey Feland, at
felandj@sagehillschool.org to be given the date and time of the make-up placement exam; we aim to have all placement exams completed in May.
Heritage (bilingual or native) speakers of the modern languages offered by the department must contact the department chair for placement. Depending on the student’s proficiency level, the department may require enrollment in another language; the student will be eligible to enroll in an Honors or AP course of their heritage language with department approval beginning in their junior year. Please note that freshmen are not eligible to enroll in Honors or AP World Language courses.
Below, you will find the descriptions of our Level I and II courses. If you have any questions regarding placement, you may contact Dr. Feland or the teacher listed in the course description.
