Recently relocated to the western side of Sage Hill School, the organic garden/eco-lab will be re-sown with the help of students and volunteers over the next few months. The garden originally grew where the new tennis facility is being constructed.
The new location offers more space, a sprawling grass lawn and is adjacent to the chicken coop outside of the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center. The relocation now offers students closer proximity to what will soon be known as the Eco-Lab, where science teacher Lauren Fieberg will plan hands-on teaching in the garden/lab. Students will focus on soil ecology, irrigation and crop rotation but also learn about environmental and cultural impacts of agro-ecology.
Outdoor Hub for Learning“The garden is now in its permanent location and we’re excited to do more outdoor learning,” explains Fieberg. However, the garden needs a lot of Sage Hill community green thumbs to help it grow into its new home.
The garden is run by students from the Environmental Club, also known as the Eco Club, which meets every Friday during X-block to work in the garden. The club always welcomes new members. In addition, the Garden Collaborative Service Learning group headed by Sage Hill English teacher Joan Alvarez and Fieberg works to connect the larger Orange County community to the Sage Hill garden and offers garden-based education.
How to HelpFieberg is planning a gardening kick-off event in early October, for students, families, faculty and staff to help plant and mulch the area. In the past, the Sage Hill organic garden, also known as Savannah’s Garden (affiliated with a local nonprofit) grew and sold organic produce and plants such as garlic, onions, kale, strawberries, flowers, herbs and more. Fieberg’s goal is to bring back these crops and create a farm stand.
First and foremost, however, the garden is a place of learning. “The garden is a place on campus where students can be themselves,” says Fieberg. “We’re excited to get the entire Sage Hill community involved. This is a great place to connect with others.”
