Sage Hill School Girls' Basketball Team Honored By Costa Mesa City Council

Sage Hill School Girls' Basketball Team Honored By Costa Mesa City Council
The Costa Mesa City Council honored Sage Hill School’s state champion girls’ basketball team at their meeting on Tuesday, April 5.

Mayor John Stephens spoke and recognized the team with a proclamation from the City of Costa Mesa. He shared that the Sage Hill team is the first girls’ basketball team from Newport-Mesa to win a state championship. The last time a basketball team from Newport-Mesa won a state championship was Edison boys’ basketball in 1991. The Sage Hill team is also the only team from Orange County to win a state championship so far this year.

Each member of the Sage Hill girls’ basketball team was called up individually and received a certificate from the city. Coach Kerwin Walters also said a few words, sharing his gratitude to the city and praising his team of young girls for their hard work and resiliency this season.

The team will also be recognized by the Newport Beach City Council at their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, April 26.

In March, the team battled their way through the CIF Division 2 State Championship game and came out victorious -- beating San Joaquin Memorial at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. The team was the first in Sage Hill School history to win a state championship in a team sport.
