JCL Students Win Second Place Overall in Division at State Convention

Thirty-nine Sage Hill students attended this year’s Junior Classical League state convention and won many awards, including winning second place overall as a team in their division.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the students' performance this year. We more than doubled our point total from last year's state convention,” said Latin teacher and JCL advisor Jeffrey Feland. “I think that what they have achieved speaks monuments about their dedication not simply to JCL, but more importantly to their love of learning about Greco-Roman antiquity. These students put in a lot of time and effort beyond the classroom, and it is so great to see them being rewarded and acknowledged for their hard work.”

During the convention, students compete in a variety of events including academic tests, chariot races, athletic events, catapult launches, a spirit competition and more.

Helping the team to the second place overall finish were three other especially great finishes: second place in the Spirit competition; second place in High School Level 3 Certamen; and third place in High School Level 2 Certamen.

Certamen is a quiz bowl-style event in which teams try to score as many points as possible over 20 rounds of questions.

In addition to awards, junior Sam Cohen was elected as Southern Representative to the California Junior Classical League State Board of Officers.

“With Sam's election to Southern Representative, we are also now officially in SCRAM preparation mode,” Feland said. “We are looking forward to hosting Latin students from all over Southern California next fall, and there is already a dedicated group of students working on their plans and preparations to ensure that we host a memorable and amazing event for all involved.”

“The Sage Hill JCL chapter has been having a phenomenal year, but they are ready and excited for more. I was so impressed that when we got back to school, the students didn't just say they were proud of their second place overall finish. Instead, they were already talking about how they could win first place next year,” Feland said. “It is that kind of enthusiasm and energy that have been so contagious and motivating for all our students.”
