Sage Hill Junior Classical League Wins Multiple Awards at State Convention

Students in Sage Hill’s Junior Classical League (JCL) participated in a two-day state convention and won multiple awards, including third place in the state in the certamen competition.

The 63rd annual JCL state convention was held April 13 and 14 at the Menlo School in Atherton, Calif. During the convention, students compete in a variety of events including academic tests, chariot races, athletic events, catapult launches, a spirit competition and more.

“The certamen competition was a highlight at this year's convention,” said Latin teacher Jeffrey Feland, also the faculty advisor for JCL.

Certamen is a quiz bowl-style event in which teams try to score as many points as possible over 20 rounds of questions. Teams are organized according to the level of Latin they are currently enrolled in. Sage Hill’s third-place winning team included Brian Yu, Zachary Decker, Alistair Coyle, Joey Cha and Aidan Rowe.

“The progress that our certamen teams have made this year alone has been very inspiring, and we all look forward to continuing to grow and perform even better at next year's competitions,” Feland said.

The following students also won awards at the convention in various categories (student, test/event, placement and Latin level [if applicable]):

Brian Kim, Derivatives, 1st, HS-1;
Brian Yu, History, 1st, HS-2;
Richard Horn, History, 2nd, HS-1;
Brian Kim, Vocabulary, 2nd, HS-1;
Brian Yu, Mythology, 2nd (tie), HS-2;
Ben Miller, Daily Life, 2nd, HS-3;
Kimaya Reddy, Cartoons, 2nd;
Trinity Cha and Ezugo Ononye, 2nd, Couples Costume (as Persephone and Hades)
Jeffrey Walbridge, History, 3rd, HS-3;
Jeffrey Walbridge, Illustrated Quotes, 3rd;
Sage Hill chapter, Ultimate Frisbee, 3rd.

The convention also features the important business of electing new state officers for the next year. Each chapter may only submit up to two candidates for state offices.

Sage Hill was honored to have both of its nominees make it onto the final ballot: sophomore Stephanie Yang ran for secretary, and sophomore Brian Yu ran for 1st Vice-President.

Brian Yu was elected 1st Vice-President and will serve on the state board beginning in May. His duties will include reaching out to schools that currently do not have JCL chapters and packaging helpful information for them.

“I am very proud of all the students who attended and competed in this year's convention.” Feland said. “I have really enjoyed seeing the passion and enthusiasm that Sage Hill students bring to JCL; our students put in a lot of time and effort into preparing for this event and these contests.”
