Sage Hill Publications Staff Earns Top Honors at Regional Competition
The Sage Hill Publications Staff earned more first place wins than any other school at the recent Orange Country Journalism Education Association (OCJEA) Writeoff Competition at Fullerton College. “We were huge winners at OCJEA,” said Sage Hill School Publications Staff adviser Konnie Krislock. “Our students have extraordinary talent and creativity and it’s very gratifying to see their efforts rewarded,” Krislock added.

OCJEA is an organization that supports and fosters excellence of instruction in educational journalism and it holds an annual competition for student journalists. The Sage Hill Publications Staff took first place in the Yearbook Sweepstakes at the competition.

Staff members also won five other first-place individual awards. Two combined yearbook teams of junior Stephanie Min and sophomore Niva Razin (who won third place) and juniors Claire Lin and Vale Lewis (who won first place) garnered enough points in both design and copywriting to edge out Sunny Hills High School for the award.

The staff also scored first place awards in both on-the-spot photography events. Senior Keeyun Jackie Nam got the top honor in yearbook photography and junior Sahar Emtiaz was awarded first place in news photography. It is the first time in OCJEA history that students from the same school have won both the photography top spots.

Lynn Fong, the Publications Staff cartoonist and design editor, won first place in cartooning. Last year, Fong won first place at the state event.

The staff’s most honored writers the past two years — Julia Dupuis and Claire Dwyer — won third place and fifth place, respectively, in Critical Review. This is Dwyer's third consecutive top 10 finish at OCJEA.

In the two “playoff writing categories”— editorials and sports — senior editor-in-chief
Kristin Saroyan and online editor Tommy Lee each took home a 9th place in their on-the-spot events.

Freshman Sarah Kim was awarded an honorable mention in Novice News, a category for beginning writers. Read more in Sage Hill’s Lightning Bolt Online.
