Volleyball Alumnae Hit NCAA Tournament

Volleyball Alumnae Hit NCAA Tournament
Sage Hill 2015 graduates Maddy Abbott, Halland McKenna, and Kekai Whitford all had a chance to play in the NCAA tournament this year with their respective universities. Although at times they played against each other, the Sage Hill community was rooting for all of them to win.

"For any high school to have three players all playing large roles in top university programs at the same time is rare,” said Dan Thomassen, coach for the Sage Hill Girls’ Volleyball team. “To have three from the same graduating class AND from a school the size of Sage Hill is unheard of. However, nothing surprises me with the accomplishments of Halland, Kekai, and Maddy. They are an unbelievable trio," he added.

Whitford attends Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and plays defensive specialist for the LMU volleyball team. Her team beat Colorado State and Stanford University last week in the 2015 Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Championship. LMU is scheduled to play Kansas this Friday, December 11 at 5:30 PM at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.

For LMU to advance this past week, Whitford’s team had to play Stanford, where McKenna plays libero. Stanford made it the second round of the NCAA tournament before LMU knocked them out. Sage Hill Athletic Trainer Meaghan Beaudoin attended the playoff and rooted for both teams. “I had to cheer on KeKai and Halland. It was amazing to see them both play in the NCAA,” said Beaudoin.

University of Michigan’s Maddy Abbot is a setter for their volleyball team, which also went to the tournament. Abbot’s team was defeated by UCLA in the second round, but we expect to see her next year in the tournament.
