Junior Launches Collection Drive for Syrian Refugees

Junior Launches Collection Drive for Syrian Refugees
English classes typically inspire playwrights, poets and writers of all kinds. But Sage Hill junior Lauren Fishman decided to take action after her Accelerated English III class discussion about John Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath” turned to global issues. That’s where she learned about the plight of 12 million Syrian refugees fleeing to other countries.

“It took me by surprise that I had heard so little about these issues and that it had been going on so long. I really wanted to do something to help,” said Fishman. With encouragement from her English teacher Joan Alvarez, Fishman began researching and reading articles from all over the world about the refugee crisis.

Fishman decided the best way to help was to help deliver warm clothing and blankets to the refugees via a collection drive. With a long, arduous winter’s journey ahead for millions of refugees, warm clothing and blankets are essential. “Through her beautiful spirit, Lauren put her care and concern toward a tangible action with the clothing collection for the Syrian refugees,” said Alvarez.

How You Can Help
Fishman is asking the Sage Hill community to donate new and used jackets, coats, blankets, warm hats and gloves. A collection bin is outside of Alvarez’s English classroom, H212, in the D. Diane Anderson Family Humanities Building at Sage Hill. Anyone who donates to the drive will receive a holiday cookie bag.

The collection drive is slated to continue through Friday, December 4, but Fishman may extend it into the week of December 7. All items will be sent to the humanitarian organization, Embrace Relief.
