Sage on a Roll - Defeats University High School: 14-4
Well, whatever the boys are doing to prepare for games, they need to keep doing it as they say. Perhaps we should just schedule all our games on the day of SAT testing. In any event, the Sage Hill Lacrosse team took the field one day after defeating Tustin High School, and on the same day of SAT testing. Despite both teams starting out a bit sluggish and flat, the game picked up momentum in the latter part of the first quarter with Max Ellison leading the way with 2 goals. Max did "one better" than his scoring against Tustin, recording 9 goals and 2 assists for the game.
But what was far more impressive was the inspired play of the supporting cast of players, starting with our defense and Sam Simon who had a monster game. In the words of the kids, Sam's play was "sick." He saved 13 shots, while the opposition took 31 shots on goal. More impressive was when Sam went out of the protective plane of the goal and met the other team's shooter in front of the crease. By doing so, Sam was able to cut off any angle for the shot and prevented the shot from taking place.
Returning to the offense, the guys are starting to learn to trust each other and that translates into team play. Taylor Ross and Alex Raymond had a very nice goal and assist, respectively. Taylor recorded 2 goals, and many ground balls and hustle plays. Alex had 2 assists on the day with a few ground balls and hustle plays as well.
The Milner-Ellison combo proved again that team play can dominate opponents. Mark had another inspiring game with 2 goals and 1 assist. Brendan Killaly handled most of the face-offs and won over 1/2 of them and played an all around consistent game.
Justin Barbour, our Mr. Versatile, scored his first goal of the season, took a face off and was all over the field. Sam Witte looked awesome out there, playing super aggressive. Frank Shapiro, continues to show his versatility and resilience as well, being involved in almost every play when he was near the ball and had a beautiful assist that led to a goal.
Back to the defense - - well, as I've said before, it starts with defense and in addition to Sam, all of our D-poles stepped up big time. Craig Jackson plays like a man possessed with great reads on defense. TJ Danner, Michael Ramming, Ford Hanour, and Alec Van Hoogenstyn, picked up many ground balls and had great defensive "stops." Our defensive "clears" are improving, and I don't believe we had one turnover from a clear.
The team is coming together and I'm proud of the way the guys are playing. If I didn't mention anybody it is not from lack of effort. These young men are starting to realize that if they play together as a team, good things will happen. When we play too much as individuals, going one-on-one, we don't get the job done. Our record is now 2-1 and our next game is against a good team, Woodbridge High School. I believe the guys are up to the challenge.
