Our student-athletes had a fantastic game against Division IV Calvary Chapel in Santa Ana on Wednesday night. This non-league game gave our team a chance to practice and experience yet another level of play.
Overall, we moved the ball around well, utilizing all players and all positions. We looked solid and composed on the field. Ben Capaldi did a fantastic job as a sweeper. Both Co-captain Michael Bear and Max Ellison held the defense well, primarily offering support to Ben, but also making some great runs to support the center. Alex Till kept up with a strong and fast forward and made some great passes. Both Nick Singarella and Mark Milner controlled the center well and maintained possession.
There were many switches of play and plenty of simple, yet effective, movement of the ball. Lion Wintemute, Blake Myers, Drew Wheeler and Kam Fujii made several runs and some wonderful crosses. Lion in particular was hungry for a goal, creating great chances for himself and for his teammates. Kyle, who is recovering from an illness, gave his best for a good 20 minutes. He played solid defense and was able to pull one ball from the mouth of the goal. Both Taylor Ross and Colton Gyulay ran their hearts out and created many one-two touches, breaking down the opponent’s defense. Taylor Ross was named Player of the Game for his ability to attack effectively and for scoring two great goals.
This first goal started with Mark Milner in minute 6. Mark sent a fantastic through-ball to Lion Wintemute. Lion crossed it to Colton, who in his usual way flicked in the air back to Taylor Ross. Taylor didn’t hesitate and slammed a great shot past the keeper.
In minute 25, the opponent responded. Off a throw-in in the final third from Lion, our team was committed up top. Responding with a quick counter-attack to the only forward, Ben Capaldi chased the forward on the flank and put pressure on him. Alex Till covered for Ben in the 18-yard box, and Craig Jackson was in a good position. The forward somehow managed to face Craig and took a shot. The ball deflected off Ben’s hand and passed through the near post. Despite this, Craig had a wonderful performance and was able to keep us in the game and hold the opponent to one goal.
In minute 35, a Calvary defender passed the ball back to the keeper. Taylor wisely made no assumption and pushed forward, challenging the keeper. Somehow the keeper gave up the ball to Taylor, who did not hesitate to teach the opponent a lesson.
