The Lightning faced Bolsa Grande in Garden Grove on Monday afternoon. The field needed a hair cut to say the least. Co-captain Micheal Bear couldn’t play due to an injury to his wrist and might be out for the entire season, unfortunately. Co-captain Nick Singarella played the sweeping position instead. One quality that our team demonstrated very clearly this game is that we don't give up. We allowed three goals in the first half and came back victorious with a score of 6-4. Yes-ten goals total! We started the game slow, out of place and out of touch. The opponent scored in minute four off a penalty kick. In minute 26, the ball bounced twice in the first six and there went the second goal. Eight minutes later, off a collision in the center circle between Kyle Simon and Nick, the opponent seized the moment and drove the ball for a good 40 yards. Alex Till chased the ball but couldn’t get to it. Lack of verbal and non-verbal communication cost us this second goal. Despite this, Kyle had a terrific game, feeding the forwards many great balls, and intercepting passes in the air and on the ground. The boys began to build momentum and had their real first chance in minute 39. Nick took the ball from the middle and sent it to Mark Milner, who popped it to Lion Wintemute and Goal! The first half ended with a 1-3 score.
In minute 50, Freshman Blake Myers scored off a corner kick from Mark. Two minutes later, we tied the game off a free kick. Blake intercepted the ball from Nick, who in turn passed it to sophomore Drew Wheeler to finish it. Drew had a fantastic game and excelled with many great crosses, one goal, and one assist. In minute 61, Blake ran with the ball for a while and passed it to Colton Gyulay. Colton in turn served the ball to Lion, who scored to give us the lead. In minute 66, Bolsa Grande took advantage and lofted the ball to an empty net. In minute 75 Mark made a nice pass to Drew on the flank. Drew crossed a beautiful pass over the keeper’s head to find Lion for his hat trick. Finally, in minute 78, Craig Jackson who had two great saves made a pass to Mark in the middle. Mark ran with the ball and passed it to Colton. Colton scored and allowed no chance for the opponent to catch up. All six goals were well executed. Overall, we had a great game despite a rough start. Thanks to all the parents who came out to support the team. Tonight, we’ll return to campus and face Rancho Alamitos at 5:00 sharp.
