The Boys Varsity soccer team opened the season with a fantastic away-game against Calvary Chapel Downey last night. The exciting match ended with a 3-3 score. Overall, we dominated the game. Our student-athletes played in the final third for about 25 minutes blasting shots one after the other. Despite the field condition, we created many chances but couldn’t score. We maintained our shape and composure, and we played a physical game. Two out of three goals for Downey came off dead balls. In minute 26, Co-captain Michael Bear slipped in the muddy field, and the ball found the opponent’s foot. That lucky player blasted it into the back of the net. Four minutes later, off a throw-in, an open player flicked the ball into the net. Six minutes later, off a free kick, the opponent finished it again. This was a miscommunication between two players on our part. It’s worth noting that Andrew Wheeler (a new sophomore at Sage Hill) pulled a sure goal from the goal line in minute 20. Andrew is proving to be a hustler and an aggressive player and we are thrilled to have him.
At half time, the instructions were to mark the opponent tight in the back, to avoid getting caught in the off-sides, and to trust one another with simple, accurate, and paced passes.
Despite the score, the Sage squad persevered with determination to win. They kept their shape and composure, and their efforts were rewarded. The last 20 minutes was squarely ours again. In minute 58, Colton Gyulay made a great pass from the center to co-captain Nick Singarella. Nick passed through a defender and rolled the ball from a difficult angle into the back of the net. In minute 65, Lion Wintemute who made several great runs on the flanks, took the ball from the middle of the field and blasted it past the keeper’s hands. Finally in minute 72, Michael took one of many terrific free kicks. He drove it passed the far post to find Blake Myers’ head and goal! Blake, the only freshmen on the team, was named player of the game by his teammates. A very unselfish, creative player made several dangerous passes and helped a great deal in the attacking midfield.
Taylor Ross and Nick had three shots each. They both had a wonderful game and showed lots of presence on the field. Mark Milner won most balls in the air and controlled the midfield quiet well. Stopper Max Ellison was all over the place. He played with heart as usual, did lots of damage control and made some great passes. Jake and Craig both had a wonderful game in the net. They both shared time and made a few beautiful catches. Colton, in addition to the great assist, had some wonderful runs, flicked the ball creatively twice and made a great shot on goal.
Congratulations to the Varsity team for a tremendous effort and a remarkable start of the season!
