Newport Harbor wins Lightning Invitational for Third Year in a Row

Newport Harbor won the Lightning Invitational Boys Team Tournament for the third year in a row played at the Tennis Club of Newport Beach this weekend. The field was one of the best in years with St. Ignatius from San Francisco, St. Margaret's, Canyon of Anaheim, Newport Harbor, and host Sage Hill. Newport Harbor was perfect at 4-0, defeating St. Margaret's 7-2, Sage Hill 7-2, Canyon 6-3, and St. Ignatius 5-4. St. Ignatius defeated St. Margaret's 9-0, Canyon 6-3, Sage Hill 7-1, before losing to Newport Harbor in a close 4-5 match. The format was 5 singles and 4 doubles sets per round (best of 9 sets) with players allowed to play singles and doubles.
 
MVP in Singles of the Lightning was senior Reese Stalder, who has committed to TCU to play tennis. He was also MVP in Doubles with David Lee. The first two time MVP (singles and doubles) in the history of the 12 year event.
 
Named to the All Tournament Team were Newport's Ryan Young, David Schaefer and Gavin Leonard; St. Margaret's Trent Sorenson and Marc Haddad, Sage Hill's Kenan Torlic and Aarash Etedali; Canyon's Derik Nguyen, Scott Nguyen, and Lyndon Buij; and St. Ignatius' Derek Austin and Timothy He.
