Sage defeats St. Margaret's
An enthusiastic crowd braved the cold, foggy weather to watch the boys Varsity soccer team continue their winning streak by beating St. Margaret's at home. St. Margaret's looked fantastic, dominating the game with perhaps a 55-45 ball possession. However, we also looked good, collected, and communicative. We kept our shape despite the pressure. The forceful opponent pushed our team to retreat back for a while.
Jake Blitzer was a huge presence in the net, saving at least two great shots. One of them, in the second half, was from inside the six yard box. Ben Capaldi did a great job controlling the back. He looked collected and in control. Player of the game Max Ellison did a fabulous job in the stopping position. He lost only two or three balls the entire game, and he played intelligent soccer. He was physical but clean and made many great passes to his teammates in the midfield. To the sides, Alex Till and Co-captain Michael Bear held their own. They were tested numerous times by fast runners on the flank. Michael, in his usual demeanor, supported the defense very well. He's coming back into his game after he broke his arm about a month ago.
In the middle, Mark Milner and Co-Captain Nick Singarella looked good. At times, the middle was left empty, but that is mainly due to their movement around the field. Blake Myers and Lion Wintemute simply looked fantastic. They fed the attacking players a great deal and supported the full back players as well. Justin Stroud gave us 15 minutes of great runs and played solid defense as well.
Finally, Colton Gyulay and Taylor Ross in the final third played a major role, first in contributing to the lone goal, and second in forcing four to five defenders to stay on top of them. They made some quick runs and were present in the front being a true nuisance to the shaky defense of the opponent.
In minute 20, a ball flew from the back toward Lion Wintemute on the left hand side. Lion flicked the ball with his head to Colton Gyulay who was making a run on the touch-line. Colton intelligently crossed it towards Taylor Ross at knee-level. Taylor laid it off back to Lion, who was running toward the goal. Lion blasted the curved ball from about 25 yards out to the upper left hand side of the keeper. The keeper had no chance. Ironically, this was our very first shot at the goal.
