Juniors Win Prestigious Writing Awards With Historical Fiction
Sage Hill students Jolin Chan ‘21 and Grace Ma ‘21 entered this year’s 2020 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing Competition and received prestigious Certificates of Superior Writing Awards.
Only a small percentage of students who enter (and only two from each school are allowed to enter) receive this award, and this is the first time in Sage Hill history that any of our students have received this honor, according to English teacher Arlie Parker.
Both students submitted excerpts from longer pieces of historical fiction about the experiences of Chinese-American immigrants in the late 1800s.
“These girls are extremely talented writers and they have the ability to bring the past vividly to life so that current day readers experience these events with startling clarity. Their writing is truly amazing,” Parker said. “I believe that both girls’ novels will be published one day. Both Jolin and Grace have received significant recognition in the past for their haiku and poetry, but this is the first time either of their fiction pieces has been recognized.”
