Featured Alumni Q&A: Tanner Tremaine '13

Tanner Tremaine, 2013
Newport Beach, CA
University of Southern California: Marshall School of Business - Business Administration with a focus in Real Estate Finance

What is your proudest accomplishment since graduating from Sage Hill School?
Graduating from USC and going straight into my dream job at HFF [a real estate company in Orange County].

What about your experience at Sage Hill prepared you for what you are doing now?
I think that the long hours spent on homework and sports were the best preparation for the long hours that are required in the financial industry today. Though it sucks at the time, learning to push yourself when you do not want to is the most important task to learn while in high school.

What about your Sage Hill experience impacted the person you are today?
I was fortunate to be a part of many amazing organizations during my time at Sage Hill, each of them playing a significant role in who I am today. I would say that being a part of Honor Committee and Student Ambassadors impacted me the most because of how it taught me to engage with people and changed how I look at different people’s perspectives.

If you could share one piece of advice to current Sage Hill students, what would it be?
As Sage Hill students, you are likely high achievers and a good number of you are perfectionists like me and so many of my friends were (are). Remember, the words of Anne Lamott: "I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.” When you stop trying to be perfect, the nearest thing to perfect ends up happening anyway.

What’s your favorite Sage-y memory?
So many great memories, but turning the school into a kindergarten for our senior prank was by far my favorite day at Sage Hill. I never saw all the students and faculty smile and laugh as much as on that day.
