Students Get Professional Experience from Summer Internships

Over the summer, some Sage Hill students got the opportunity to experience life in the working world as they participated in internships and Shadow Days as part of the Sage Hill Internship Program (SHIP).

“SHIP offered a wide variety of exciting shadow days and internships this summer,” said Bethany Pitassi, assistant director for Global Outreach in the Sage Center. “Students did everything from work in a dentist office where they took impressions of teeth and made whitening trays to spending the day at Google to see what goes on there. Students also had opportunities to work with UCI professors and see how social media was used to promote a shampoo company.”

Senior Niva Razin interned at Boeing’s Huntington Beach facility.

“It exceeded my wildest expectations, and I learned so much!” she said.

One of the best things that happened while she was there was getting lost on the campus and meeting an employee who helped her find her way. They started talking and connecting about their similar backgrounds, and she was able to learn a lot about what he did with cybersecurity for Boeing. It was an opportunity that wasn’t directly related to the internship program, but one she valued greatly.

Of Boeing, she said, “They make it really easy to succeed and have a great experience!”

Sophomore Kate Mlouk completed three internships this summer, and two of them were spent shadowing doctors.

“My favorite internship was shadowing the cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Abraham,” Mlouk said. “I came out so inspired and excited for the future and hopefully a career in the field of medicine. These two days were by far the most enriching and educational days of my entire summer, and I will always be grateful for all of the experiences I was able to take away!”

Sophomore Alex Tse participated in two Shadow Days with doctors, one at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and one at Hoag Hospital’s Emergency Department.

“With Dr. Gibbs [at CHOC], I was allowed the opportunity to go into his office and see him follow up with and review surgeries with patients. He also offered me the opportunity to go back to watch a surgery at CHOC once I turn 16,” Tse said. “This summer was very fun and productive, and I really enjoyed it!”

There will be more opportunities this school year for students to shadow top professionals in a variety of fields. SHIP can help students decide whether to pursue a certain college or career path, and having internship experience can also boost their resumes for college applications.

If you’re interested in participating in SHIP, stay tuned.

“SHIP 2018 will start in November, so be on the lookout for emails and announcements to learn how you can get involved,” Pitassi said.
