More Awards for Stellar Publications Staff
It may be the last week of school, but awards are still in season for Sage Hill’s Publications Staff. In May, The Bolt student newspaper and its editor-in-chief Kristin Saroyan, a senior, were honored with a second place from the American Scholastic Association in its high school division, the first time the monthly newspaper has ever won a national award for its design and content.
In a separate contest, five Sage Hill School students won awards in the annual California Press Women's regional mail-in of current articles, photos and videos. Junior Vale Lewis won a second place for a feature article on SAME's discussion of tough issues on campus in December.
Sophomore Juliet Farkas entered three videos, two of which won second place—on sophomore Ethan Vovan's Rubik Cube prowess and on last year's multicultural fair (with sophomore Ava LeWinter)—and a first place in video editing and production on the beginning of the 2016 football season.
The first place football video will go on to the group's national competition, the results of which will be revealed in September.
This year is our Publication Staff's most successful season ever with multiple writing awards at regional and state writeoff competitions and sweepstakes honors for its yearbook on-the-spot team in February.
Both Saroyan and her co-editor-in-chief senior Namita Prakash have been on staff for four years, the first time in Sage Hill School history that has occurred. Publications Staff adviser Konnie Krislock has named the staff for the next year with juniors Vale Lewis, Tommy Lee, Stephanie Min, Claire Lin and Kandis McGee making up the editorial board. Production begins in August with the first issue of The Bolt to be on campus the first day of school.
"We started that 'tradition' last year and it stuck," Krislock said. "We even get the printers working early to publish Issue #1 of The Bolt because it's the first high school newspaper in Orange County to come out in August."
