Sage wins first league game

The boys Varsity soccer team opened the League season on Tuesday and traveled to San Juan Capistrano to face Capo Valley Christian. We are proud of our team’s performance. We played intelligently and creatively, although we couldn’t convert numbers in the first half. The opponent had a great keeper and they decided very early in the game to play defense, hoping to pull a tie.

In the first half, the Lightning pushed hard and created many great chances, but couldn’t score. We took fifteen shots total, as opposed to the opponent's one shot that hit the post. In the second half, we adjusted the strategy a bit. First, we used a 3-4-3 formation, pushing Sweeper Ben Capaldi up top. Second, we played patiently in the middle and created more sure chances. Taylor helped a lot with some nifty tricks like using his heel, flicking the ball to his teammates, and resetting the ball back.

Finally, in minute 45, Taylor broke the ice. Co-captain Michael Bear sent a driven ball to Colton Gyulay. Colton flicked it to Taylor, and Taylor pushed it into the goal. The score was now 1-0, but Sage Hill was just getting started.

In minute 60, Lion sent a great ball to Colton. Colton once again flicked it to Kyle Simon. Kyle scored nearly the same way he did in a previous game. He made a run early to find the ball in front of him. Colton, who had missed a few scoring chances early in the game, gave two beautiful assists.

In minute 75, Ben crossed the ball to Lion Wintemute from the opponent’s goal line. Lion “chested” it to Drew Wheeler, who finished it. The final score was 3-0 and it was a wonderful way to begin our League play.

Tonight is the big night! We hope to see many fans at the field. We’ll face St. Margaret’s at 5:00. Tomorrow, we’ll host the alumni and try to steal away the only win they received in five years.
