Sage ties Rancho Alamitos

The Lightning hosted Rancho Alamitos (Div. V) last week and tied the game 1-1. We faced them last season on their home field and lost the game 0-1. Overall, the game was great to watch. There were many scoring opportunities and many counter-attacks from both teams. Rancho Alamitos demonstrated impressive speed, great technical ability, and a good read of the game. Our student-athletes excelled with their desire to win and play well, their quick counter-attacks, and their physical presence. One thing that has been consistent about Sage Hill’s Varsity squad is that they are never intimidated by any team. This is a quality that we coaches admire in our players.

Kam Fujii had a great game in the middle, always making the simplest passes possible. He’s beginning to step out of his comfort zone learning not to hesitate to compete against bigger players. Colton Gyulay played intelligently the entire game. He created many one-versus-one chances for his teammates. Taylor made the defensive players weary. He simply did not stop moving, with or without the ball. We often say in soccer that the most important player is the one who does not have the ball. Taylor made several runs that created space for his teammates to step forward. He created the best scoring chance at the end of the game. Taylor took the ball from the right-hand side in the final third. He dribbled through two players with his body facing the sideline. Then he made a quick turn and crossed the ball past the keeper. We were a second too late to simply roll the ball into the net.

In minute 45, the opponent took a shot from a close angle and scored. Craig (who had a fantastic game overall, saving six shots on goal) simply lost track of his position.

In minute 57, Kyle Simon made an early run from the right middle of the field. Max Ellison took a throw-in from the other side. Blake Myers flicked it to the open space to find Kyle, who arrived just in time to finesse the ball past the keeper. It was a smart move on Kyle’s part. A shot could have gone anywhere. Kyle had a wonderful game, making many impressive runs from the flank, crossing great curved balls, and playing good defense when ball possession was lost. He was named player of the game by his teammates.
