Anie Robinson Named Top O.C. Chemistry Teacher

By Daniel Langhorne
Science Department Chair Anie Robinson recently earned the Orange County Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award from the Orange County Section of the American Chemical Society (OCACS).

Robinson said she felt very honored to have received the prestigious award.

“I have always felt appreciation from my students and the school community, for which I am extremely grateful,” Robinson said, “When I decided to become a teacher in 2011, I did not realize until years later that I would actually be the one learning most from my students. They push me to become better every single year.”

OCACS annually fields nominations for exceptional teachers from which committee members select a short list of finalists. Earlier this year, Robinson hosted seasoned educators to observe one of her AP Chemistry classes. During the visit, committee members also interviewed Assistant Head of School for Academics Dr. Matt Balossi and reviewed her curricular samples.

“Anie Robinson is an extraordinary educator and colleague,” Dr. Balossi said. “As department chair and our primary AP and Organic Chemistry teacher, she continuously goes above and beyond to ensure our students excel and find joy in their academics. We’re extremely proud of Anie for earning this honor from her fellow chemists.”

In 2022, Robinson was honored with a University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award for her dedication to students. Each year, newly admitted University of Chicago students can nominate an educator who played a significant role in their education and made a positive impact in their lives. Thousands of students submitted their nominations.

Besides her teaching and department leadership, Robinson is a talented pianist who performed for the school community during the Women’s History Month Celebration hosted in conjunction with Sage Center Day on March 20.

“Each unique group of students I meet in the classroom bring with them a new set of personalities, abilities, and questions that drive my growth as a teacher,” Robinson said. “Thanks to my students, I have become a better listener, communicator, and overall better human being who I hope they can look up to as a positive role model.”

Robinson will receive her latest award at the Orange County ACS High School Chemistry Awards Banquet on Tuesday, May 21 at Concordia University, Irvine.
