Whitney no match for Sage as they fall in 3 straight games
Sage defeated Whitney in three straight sets 25-23, 28-26, 25-21 in their last home league game of the year. Upholding a tradition of honoring seniors playing in their last home game, head coach Dan Thomassen shared some kind words and reflections before the game about the contributions that Ash Khayami and Chris Zadra have made to the Lightning volleyball program over the years as they conclude their time at Sage in June. Then, the rest of the Sage players made sure the two seniors were sent off with a great team victory. Senior Ash Khayami served well and recorded 5 digs in a strong effort for the Lightning. Senior co-captain Chris Zadra tallied 20 kills, 9 digs, 4 aces and 2 blocks in his last regular league game at the Ube. As has been the case all year for the Lightning, this was another impressive team performance. Junior co-captain Kent Kawaguchi had 37 assists, 7 kills and 7 digs in the contest. Nicky Boulos and Kyle Jaffe played their usual brilliant defense recording 17 and 16 digs respectively. Jack Burgi had 7 kills and 8 digs, Cameron Hall pitched in 3 kills and 3 digs and Sam Masarik played big at the net all day defensively and had 2 kills to help send the seniors off in style. The win keeps Sage in control of their own destiny in seeking to secure an outright Academy League title in 2012. The Lightning are now 16-9 overall and 7-1 in Academy League play. With two games remaining in league play Sage can assure at least a tie for the Academy League title with a win on the road this Friday, April 27th against a scrappy Oxford Academy team. Game time is 5:00pm.
