Simi defeats Sage in a tough match

Simi Valley drove down for a 7pm, night match, versus our Sage Hill Lightning girls. Division 1 Simi definitely had some big hitters, but their serving and defense were the best we’d seen all year.

In game one (Lindsey, Hanalynn, Tierney, Katharine, Natasha, Sally, Maddie), despite huge stuff blocks from Tierney and Maddie, and what seemed like dozens of digs by Sally, Natasha, and Lindsey, Simi Valley got on a couple long runs with their serving and defense pressure, finally winning 25-15.

Game two started out slow (0-6), but the Lady Lightning fought their way back to 13-15 with big swinging by freshman and junior subs, Tess and Hayden, who eventually tallied 7 and 3 kills, respectively, for the match. Simi caught fire again and ended up taking the game 25-17.

Game three had a totally different feel, the consistency that had been lacking in the first two games was abundantly clear in the third. Simi felt the pressure of Lightning serves from Hanalynn, Tess, Maddie, and Zoe (subbed in for game 3). With continued great defense by outside hitters, Tess and Lindsey, and from Sally at Libero, the girls kept the pressure on, eventually taking the game 25-23.

Game four was a battle throughout with many lead changes, eventually being tied at 23-23. With a serving error and put away by Simi, they ended up taking the game and the match.

Overall, it was an impressive effort by Sage Hill with the best blocking and defense of the season. There was not even a hint of quit after getting beat up, score wise, the first two games. With a big tournament, Dave Mohs at Marina HS (Friday and Saturday), the girls look primed to take down some tough teams including Simi, who are also in the tournament.
