Sage Hill Set to Kick Off Girls’ Flag Football

By Daniel Langhorne
Sage Hill School will launch a Girls’ Flag Football program in 2024, joining its competitors in the Pacific Coast League in offering students the opportunity to compete in this hard-charging sport.

“It is a thrill to be on the cutting edge of a sport rapidly growing at high schools and beyond,” Director of Athletics Megan Cid said. “I’m so happy to support our female student athletes who have a passion for flag football and I cannot wait to see how the Sage Hill Lightning will bring their very best to the field.”

Several Irvine high schools competing against Sage Hill launched their own Girls’ Flag Football teams after the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) voted to sanction the sport in February.

The sport also has legs to carry it well beyond Orange County.

In October, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the addition of flag football to the program for the 2028 Olympic summer games in Los Angeles. That decision paved the way for the USA Football’s U.S. Women’s National Team to make their Olympic debut.

Sage Hill will soon announce details for an upcoming Girls’ Flag Football interest meeting for current students.
