Alumna Hopes to Revolutionize Beauty Industry with Pink Moon

Lin Chen '07 is the CEO and founder of Pink Moon, a "modern retail, wellcare + community oasis created by women, for women – through every phase of life."

How did you get started in your profession?
My foray into the natural beauty industry began right after college at 100% Pure, which is a global vegan cosmetics brand and one of the first to bring natural beauty to the masses. From there, I had a brief stint in tech and healthcare at a global PR firm, where I really honed my skills in marketing and brand positioning. Fast forward two years later, I made the trek from SF to NYC, where I worked in a leadership role at Bottega Organica (a luxury Italian organic skincare brand). It was a small company so I was doing a bit of everything from operations to managing their West Village store, to PR, D2C sales, and growing their global retail distribution. I single-handedly launched the brand in new markets throughout Asia, Europe, Canada, and the US. I was at Bottega for a little over 2.5 years.

Having the experience of growing a small brand into a global brand, I realized I wanted to launch my own consultancy so I could help others achieve this growth. I wanted to work closely with brands that are, most importantly, eco, sustainable, female-founded, and philanthropically oriented. I launched Pink Moon in 2017 with the goal of empowering brands that share my vision for a more mindful, inclusive beauty industry.

Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to work with 20 various brands in different stages of growth. I’ve helped these brands do everything from PR, brand development, rebranding, and both domestic and overseas expansion. Three months ago, I launched an e-commerce to expand my mission to create a more compassionate and inclusive beauty industry and to support women through their self-care journey.

What is your proudest accomplishment since graduating from Sage Hill School?
Launching two companies before the age of 30 and fulfilling my lifelong dream.

What about your experience at Sage Hill prepared you for what you are doing now?
At Sage Hill, a combination of the small classroom sizes with a small community feel, fostered a culture of learning and development. I was able to grow immensely through this culture over four years. Additionally, through the Service Learning programs, I learned the value of helping those in need. Philanthropy is a big part of the Pink Moon mission.

What about your Sage Hill experience impacted the person you are today? This could be a favorite class, a person, a club, etc:
Being part of a close-knit community, I learned to value building long-lasting community and connections and facilitate open and genuine conversations.

If you could share one piece of advice to current Sage Hill students, what would it be?
Don't let anyone get in the way of your passions. Tune out the noise around you and listen to your own voice. Only you know what you really want.
