Junior Wins Multiple Accolades in Global Poetry Contests
Junior Jolin Chan has had an award-winning semester, receiving multiple accolades for her poetry from some of the most impressive high school arts contests in the world.
In February, Chan’s poem “The Three-Part Saga of Fran Li, 1982” was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2020 Leonard L. Milberg ’53 High School Poetry Contest. This contest recognizes outstanding work by student writers in the 11th grade in the U.S. or abroad, and it received hundreds of entries.
In March, she received more good news. One of her poems received the honor of Highly Commended by the Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival, and her poem was published online. This poetry contest in England was judged by a poet nominated for the T.S. Eliot Prize.
Most recently, Chan won a national silver medal from the Scholastic Art & Creative Writing Awards.
“Jolin is an outstanding poet,” English teacher Arlie Parker said. She embodies the Sage Hill value of ‘creativity,’ pursuing her passion through a rich variety of independent projects. During her first three years of high school, her work has received international recognition, a testament to the fact that her poetry touches every reader who encounters her art.”
