Students Win Big at State, International Science Fairs
After their success at the Orange County Science & Engineering Fair in March, three Sage Hill students went on to win awards at the California Science & Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Pittsburgh this month.
At the CSEF, junior Alex Desbans won fourth place in the Plant Biology category with his project, The Effects of Chicken Manure and Miracle-Gro Fertilizer on the Speed of Development of Pea Plants.
Junior Grant Sheen won first place in the Mathematical Sciences category, as well as the Math Teacher's Award for Achievement, which came with a $1,250 award, for his project, Wireless Brainwave Classification for Alzheimer's Patients via Efficient Neural Network Computation.
At the Intel ISEF, Sheen won the Fourth Grand Award of $500 in the Systems Software category. He also won the Oracle Academy Special Award of $5,000 for outstanding project in the same category.
Finally, sophomore Sasha Ronaghi won a First Award of $3,000 from the Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association for her project, Designing a Water Repellent and Breathable Material for Wound Dressings Using Nanotechnology.
