Mock Trial Students Take Home Awards

Mock Trial Students Take Home Awards
Freshman Nicole Motherway (left) and Senior Lynn Fong (right) won awards at the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County’s 36th Annual Mock Trial Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Feburary 9.

Motherway won an award for her portrayal of a witness, and Fong won second place for Courtroom Artist. This is Fong’s second year as a winner in the Courtroom Artist category. “I am extremely pleased with all our Mock Trial students and very happy Nicole and Lynn were recognized with awards,” said Sage Hill Mock Trial advisor Diego Izurieta. “All the students did an amazing job. Participating in Mock Trial is a great way for our students to develop critical thinking and communication skills.”

Approximately 37 Orange County schools participated in this year’s competition. Mock Trial combines performance-based, law-related education with tournament-style, academic competition. High school students, working in teams under the careful guidance and supervision of volunteer attorney coaches and teachers, analyze the facts of a proceedings, either as members of the prosecution or defense.

The teams present their cases in real courtrooms before sitting judges and are scored by volunteer attorneys who observe from the jury box. All teams participate in at least four rounds of competition at the courthouse. Students also may compete in courtroom art and journalism contests. Students develop an understanding of our judicial system and develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, communication and team building skills, according to the Constitutional Rights Foundation, Orange County.
