Students Embrace Service Learning

Students Embrace Service Learning
Service Learning kicked off Wednesday, Sept. 28 when Sage Hill students participated in their grade-level Service Learning projects or starting working on independent projects.

Ninth and Tenth Grade Students Meet Elementary School Partners
Ninth grade students met with their third grade partners from El Sol Academy and Edward B. Cole Academy. Together, the Sage Hill and third grade students will work on a kite project based on the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math model of learning throughout the year.

Tenth grade students lead year-long, in-class literacy workshops for fourth grade students from Edward B. Cole Sr. Academy, El Sol Academy and Scholarship Prep Charter. The workshops are tied to Sage Hill tenth grade English classes. “I was amazed at the thoughtful, caring, and supportive rapport that the Sage Hill students brought to our fourth graders and look forward to seeing the relationships continue to grow between our students in the coming months,” said Scholarship Prep Charter School Founding Principal Matt Bragman.

Sophomores are sharing their life stories and helping their partners learn writing skills during the visits. Each Sage Hill sophomore and fourth grade partners will create an autobiographical essay that will be completed at the end of the year.

Juniors and Seniors Find Their Service Learning Niches
At the beginning of junior year, students are exposed to various social needs and issues in our community by visiting local nonprofit organizations and learning about the issues the organizations are working to address. Then, Sage Hill students have the opportunity to identify a community need and either create their own project or further the work of an existing organization that matches their passions and skill set.

“Through Service Learning, students have the opportunity to connect and engage with the greater community,” according to Mindy Aguirre, Assistant Director for Inclusion and Outreach at the Sage Center where she leads Sage Hill’s Service Learning. “Our program prepares students to identify community needs and inspires them to be agents of social change.”

This year, several faculty are overseeing projects that connect to Sage Hill's curriculum. Projects faculty are working on with students include the following:

  • using 3D printers to create prosthetic hands for children in need;
  • serving nearby marine environments through conservation efforts and educating participants and others through experience in marine research;
  • planning and hosting the second annual Sage Hill Multicultural Symposium on April 7;
  • equipping Orange Country biology teachers with skills and knowledge they need in order to incorporate advanced biotechnological techniques into their classroom and lab activities. Students will host a biotechnology workshop at Sage Hill on April 22 for local high school biology and AP biology teachers;
  • creating a curriculum for the Spring at Sage Civil Rights trip, to supplement visits to important monuments and museums;
  • hosting the second annual TEDx on March 3 to spread ideas worth sharing to help improve the community–TEDxSageHillSchool is an offshoot of TED talks;
  • developing the 2016-2017 wellness curriculum, contributing to a culture of health, balance of life and respect for all members of our community; and
  • caring for Sage Hill’s EcoGarden, which is full of organic vegetables, herbs, fruits and houses the School’s many chickens that need daily care.
