Fall Sports CIF-SS playoff season is in full swing and winter sports have now begun. We have had a good showing so far in the CIF-SS playoffs with five teams making the playoffs this year. Girls' Volleyball (12-7 overall record) and Boys' Water Polo (10-9 overall record) completed their seasons making it all the way to the quarter finals of CIF-SS. Girls' Volleyball competed in Division 4-AA and lost a very close match to Viewpoint High School to end their season. After winning their first ever home CIF-SS playoff game, Boys' Water Polo advanced to the quarter-finals in Division 3 of which they lost to a very strong team, Murrieta Valley High School. Girls' Tennis completed their season with an overall record of 14-8, and had a strong showing in the semi-finals of CIF-SS Division 4. Unfortunately, the Rio Mesa tennis team beat out the Lightning in semi-final play.
Boys' and Girls' Cross Country competed in CIF-SS Division 4 finals meet on Saturday, November 22. The boys' team finished 13th overall and the girls' team finished 9th overall. Neither team qualified for the CIF State Meet, but Dylan Thies, freshman, qualified for the CIF State Meet as an individual. Dylan and his coaches will be traveling to Fresno over Thanksgiving weekend to compete in the CIF State Meet. And finally, Boys' Football played in the first round of CIF-SS Division 12 by taking on Grace Brethren of Simi Valley on Friday, November 20. After a hard fought game, the Lightning was unable to hold their lead and lost by the narrow score of 17-20. Overall, the fall sport season was a success with five out of six teams advancing to post season play and all six teams taking second place in the Academy League.
The winter sports season has already begun with tryouts for the following sports: Girls' Basketball, Boys' Basketball, Girls' Soccer, and Boys' Soccer. Girls' Basketball will be working hard to repeat as the Academy League Champions for 2009-2010. Boys’ Basketball is looking strong this year and will also be making a run at their first ever league title. Girls' Soccer is on the quest for their second Academy League Championship. Boys' Soccer, who made it to the quarter-finals of CIF-SS last year, is looking to take it even further this year as well as secure the league title.
