Juniors Win First Place at 'Coolest Projects' for 'Peer Genius' Web App
Juniors Hana and Miya Stauss won first place at the “Coolest Projects North America 2018” for their peer-to-peer tutorial web app, “Peer Genius.”
“Coolest Projects” is an international event that was held for the first time in North America at the Discovery Cube Orange County on Sunday, September 23. There were more than 100 teams that traveled from as far away as Japan to compete in these five categories: Scratch, Websites, Games & Web Games, Mobile Apps, and Hardware. The Stauss twins won in the Websites category.
Junior Jackie Ni also competed in the Websites category with his project, Voluntu.io, a web application available for anyone who is interested in volunteering for Math for Service. Seniors Karishma Raghuram and Aaron Bergen competed in the Hardware category, representing the Sage Hill 3D prosthetics project with faculty advisor Tanya Lerch.
The Stauss team won a Pi-Top computer, which will allow them to create more projects and further allow them to code, Miya Stauss said.
The students wanted to acknowledge Derek Carlson, their faculty advisor for the OC Coder Sage Club; Dr. Matt Balossi; and Dr. Sandy Irani, a Sage Hill parent and Board of Trustee member.
“These three mentors have been so incredibly supportive of all of our efforts in bringing OC Coder Sage to life, which in turn, has given us the courage to really push ourselves with Peer Genius. We are forever grateful for their belief, encouragement and support in us,” Miya Stauss said.
Coolest Projects is a global competition aimed to inspire the next generation of digital creators, innovators, changemakers and entrepreneurs.
“We entered the Coolest Project last minute so did not expect to win,” Miya Stauss said. “We feel so humbled to have won first place. We both agree that Sage, its teachers and its community have given us the courage to step out of our comfort zone. We owe much to Sage!”
