Sage Hill Freshman Nets Entry to USA Hockey Girls Championships

By Daniel Langhorne
A Sage Hill freshman will skate onto the ice with the Anaheim Lady Ducks to play in the USA Hockey Girls National Championship on Friday, March 31.

For goalie Cameron Liu ’26, it’s the culmination of four years of work with many of her teammates, including her younger sister Cadence, who recently enrolled for Sage Hill’s Class of 2027.

The Anaheim Lady Ducks beat the Los Angeles Lions in the Pacific District Championship on Feb. 27 in San Jose. The 14-years-old-and-under girls’ team earned the only spot reserved for five western states at the National Championship in Frisco, Texas.

“We’ve been waiting for this win for a really long time,” Cameron said. “Last year, we lost at districts and since then I’ve been looking forward to this season because I knew we had a good team.”

The Anaheim Lady Ducks were down by a point at the end of the first quarter but then rallied with seven more goals. After clinching the district championship, Cameron first ran to hug her sister.

“It felt awesome that I was able to share this experience with my sister because it’s maybe once in a lifetime,” Cameron said.

She credits their win to practicing three to four times a week after school. In the weeks leading up to nationals, they were practicing nearly every day.

When Cameron isn’t blocking hockey pucks, she’s training with her horse Monkey for equestrian events. She competes in three-day events that include showjumping, cross country riding and dressage.

“My goal is to be an Olympian one day for equestrian. After school, that’s what I look forward to doing,” she said.

She’s proud of how she’s been able to help train Monkey from a rambunctious colt into half of a successful riding team. He occasionally acts like a surly teenager around other horses and strangers, Cameron said.

While in training, Cameron usually gets home by 9 p.m. and stays up until her homework is finished. Her seemingly boundless energy comes from thinking about her next trip to the barn.

“It’s my passion so it really doesn’t feel like I’m working,” Cameron said.

Sage Hill’s flexible X Block schedule twice a week gives her the ability to get started on homework before riding or hockey practice. Her teachers are always supportive of her extracurriculars, providing clear instructions on how she can fulfill her classwork.

English teacher John Paulsen described Cameron as the quintessential Sage Hill student.

“She has the ability to excel both on the ice as a hockey goalie, and in the arena as an accomplished equestrian all while succeeding in the classroom,” Paulsen said. “She accomplishes this all in stride with a smile on her face. Cameron is a joy to teach, and I love asking her what she did the past weekend and hearing about her exploits both on the ice and on her horse.”

Cameron thanked her parents for countless drives and unwavering support to pursue her passions.

“They make everything happen for us,” she said.
