Olympiad Teams Compete and Win at Regional Competitions
Sage Hill saw some exciting science competition victories over the last few weeks as both our Chemistry, Biology and Science Olympiad teams competed in regional competitions.
Chemistry Olympiad
Four Sage Hill students recently participated in the American Chemical Society (ACS) competition and won 2nd place in the county! Their scores brought them in just a few points behind the top spot.
“We beat some chemistry powerhouse schools like Troy, Beckman and Valencia and were just a few points away from beating University High School,” Said Anie Robinson, Science Department Chair.
Clifford Jin ‘23, Sophia Chen ‘24, Gabriel Tsai ‘23 and Ryan Nguyen ‘24 all represented Sage Hill during the exam and for the first time in school history, three of our competing students scored high enough to move on to the national exam to be held in April. Only two students per school can compete, so Cliff and Sophia will be moving on to represent Sage Hill at the national exam.
Biology Olympiad
A group of Sage Hill students participated in the Biology Olympiad which consists of three exams in which students sat for the first. Sopha Chen ‘24 scored incredibly well on the first exam and qualified to move on to the semifinal exam that is scheduled to take place on March 31.
“Overall, the Biology Olympiad is a very rigorous exam that requires hours of self-preparation and careful attention to detail,” said science teacher Derek Shapiro. “She is tenacious and did an excellent job – hoping that her success continues!”
Science Olympiad
Our Science Olympiad competed in the regional Science Olympiad competition – 14 freshmen and sophomore Sage Hill students competed against high schools across Orange County and brought home several awards across the 23 different science-related events.
“To place in the top five in any of these events is extremely difficult based on the level of competition from the various successful schools,” said chemistry teacher Kerry Langdale.

- 1st place - Write It Do It (Sophia Lin '25 and Melody Yu '25)
- 2nd place - Machine Learning (Nicole Ma '24 and Sophia Lin '25)
- 3rd place - Cell Biology (Sophia Chen '24 and Sophia Huang)
- 3rd place - Run It Code It (Aidan Zhang '25 and Melody Yu '25)
- 3rd place - Write It CAD It (Sophia Lin '25 and Melody Yu '25)
