Sage Hill JCL Participants Win Big at State Convention
Congratulations to those who participated in the virtual two-day Junior Classical League (JCL) State Convention in April. Thirty-one Sage Hill Students participated in a variety of academic, artistic, athletic and fun competitions.
“I’m very proud of how engaged our students have been, not just at state convention, but throughout this entire year,” faculty advisor Jeffrey Feland said. “They’ve done a fantastic job, and I’m so happy to see their hard work be rewarded!”
During the convention, two Sage Hill students were elected to serve on the state JCL board of officers for the 2021-22 school year: Elizabeth Casey ‘22 was elected as 1st Vice-President, and Alexis Kim ‘22 was elected as Secretary.
Here is a list of the awards and accolades earned as a part of this year’s State Convention for JCL:
Ingrid Luo ‘23, Liam Natland ‘23 and Helen Fu ‘23 won 2nd place as the HS-2 Certamen team
Matthew Charles ‘21, won 1st place in Latin Oratory; 1st place in Sight Latin Reading, and was also awarded a scholarship by California JCL to continue his studies of Latin and the Classics in college next year.

Megan Shean ‘22, won 1st place in Daily Life
Rachel Towers ‘22, won 2nd place in Mythology
Kyle Wong ‘22, won 2nd place in Derivatives
Brodie Santry ‘23, won 3rd place in Open Certamen (Advanced) and 1st place in Roman Rap Battle
Carson McNeill ‘23, won 1st place in Pictionary
Alexis Kim ‘22, won 3rd place in Mottoes, Quotes, Abbreviations, 1st place in Reading Comprehension, 1st place in Impromptu Art, 1st place in the Bake-Off, and 3rd place in Essay
Angela Tang ‘22, won 2nd place in Mythology
Adam Yang ‘22, won 1st place in the Olympika (Push-ups) competition
Helen Fu ‘23, won 2nd place in Derivatives, 3rd place in the essay competition, and 2nd place in Grammar
Ingrid Luo ‘23, won 1st place in Mythology and 1st place in World Kahoot
Kana Byrd ‘23, won 2nd place in Essay
