Alumna Takes on Water Polo & ‘Big Data’ in the Netherlands
After graduating from the University of Toronto, Rachael Jaffe ‘16 decided to move to the Netherlands to continue to play water polo. Currently, she is living in the Netherlands playing water polo at a local club in Zaandam, about 20 minutes north of Amsterdam. During the day, Jaffe interns at Dashmote as a data analyst. Starting this fall, she will be pursuing a master’s degree in public health.

How did you get started in your profession/sport/internship?
I switched to water polo after many years of competitive swimming. I love the sport and have been playing at a very high level since 8th grade. I hope to continue playing for a really long time!
Ever since the boom of "big data," I've wanted to explore the tech and big data industry. With the technical skills I developed at the University of Toronto, I was able to obtain an internship in data analytics/data science at Dashmote here in Amsterdam. Dashmote provides market insights into the food and beverage industry. It is a fascinating sector of the economy, but I am excited to pivot and begin a health-related master's program in the fall to pursue a future career in public health.

What is your proudest accomplishment since graduating from Sage Hill School?
Since graduating from Sage Hill, I have represented Canada internationally at different water polo tournaments around the world. Recently, in 2019, I helped lead Canada to a fourth-place finish at the University Games (FISU) in Naples, Italy. Academically, graduating from the University of Toronto with the highest honors is another accomplishment that I am very proud of.

What about your experience at Sage Hill prepared you for what you are doing now?
I was quite impacted by the science department at Sage Hill which pushed me to pursue a degree in STEM. I am thankful for the teachers that pushed the boundaries for high school science.

What about your Sage Hill experience impacted the person you are today? This could be a favorite class, a person, a club, etc:

Definitely soccer and everything related to soccer. Because of soccer at Sage, I have made friends for life!

If you could share one piece of advice to current Sage Hill students, what would it be?
