Academic Decathletes Take Home 11 Medals in Competition

Members of the Sage Hill Academic Decathlon team took home an assortment of medals on February 7 at the Orange County Academic Decathlon Awards Ceremony at Orange Coast College.

Academic Decathlon is a two-day event. On the first day of competition, our decathletes wrote an essay, performed a prepared and impromptu speech, and participated in an individual interview with a panel of judges.

On day two, at Westminster High School, the students took 30-minute multiple-choice tests in the subject areas of art, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, economics and social science. Each subject, with the exception of mathematics, was based on this year’s curricular focus - “In Sickness and Health: an Exploration of Illness and Wellness.”

Here is the medal count for this year’s Academic Decathlon competition:

Timothy Guo (captain) – 2nd in Mathematics, 3rd in Science, 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Social Sciences, and 5th in Music

Jolin Chan – 3rd in Essay, 2nd in Art, 3rd in Interview, 2nd in Language and Literature, 4th in Science, and 4th in Social Science

“Seniors Ava Asmani, Emily Lam and Melodie Qian did not score any medals this year, but provided great senior leadership for the team,” said faculty advisor Clayton Hatfield. “And sophomores Riya Gupta, Alison Huang and Patrick Nguyen showed great promise for next year’s competition.”
