Academic Decathlon, FBLA teams Win Multiple Awards at Local Competitions

Members of the Sage Hill Academic Decathlon team took home a nice assortment of medals on Tuesday, February 12 at the Orange County Academic Decathlon Awards Ceremony at Santa Ana High School.

Academic Decathlon is a two-day event. On the first day of competition, the decathletes wrote an essay, performed a prepared and impromptu speech, and participated in an individual interview with a panel of judges. On the second day of competition, students took 30-minute multiple-choice tests in the subject areas of art, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, economics and social science. Each area, with the exception of mathematics, was based on this year’s curricular focus of “The 1960s: A Transformational Decade.”

“We are a young team, so I am anticipating even more medals next year as our students become more familiar with the competition process,” said advisor Clayton Hatfield.

Here is the medal count for this year’s Academic Decathlon competition:

Ava Asmani (co-captain) – scored 1st in Speech and 3rd in Mathematics
Timothy Guo (co-captain) – scored 2nd in Mathematics, 2nd in Science, 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Social Sciences, and 4th in the Interview
Emily Lam – scored 2nd in Language and Literature and 2nd in Science
Colin Sueyoshi – scored 4th in Music and 5th in Science
