Instrumental Music Students Earn Spots in Orchestras in New York and California
Three students in Sage Hill’s instrumental music program are taking their talents off campus.
Junior Albert Gang (violin) was chosen to be a part of the New York String Orchestra Seminar this past December. The program brought 45 string players and 18 wind and brass players ages 16 to 23 to New York City from December 19 to 28, with two performances presented in Carnegie Hall on December 24 and December 28.
“It was one of the most intense musical experiences of my life, but also one of the most special. I had the opportunity to work with legendary artists, incredible faculty and peers,” Gang said.
Gang performed alongside some of the top young musicians in the country, as well as several of the finest musicians in the world, including Joshua Bell (violin), Yefim Bronfman (piano), and Jaime Laredo (conductor).
“This year was a big event because it was the seminar's 50th anniversary, and we had alumni join us for the second concert, including concertmasters from Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland Orchestras,” Gang said.
Earlier this month, Gang was also named a 2019 National YoungArts Foundation Honorable Mention winner in Classical Music. Selected from thousands of applications, he was recognized for his outstanding artistic achievements and joins 710 of the nation’s most promising young artists from 44 states across visual, literary, design and performing arts.
Additionally, two Sage Hill students have earned the opportunity to participate in the California All-State Orchestra this year: sophomore Alan Wang (violin) and junior Ashley Chung (cello).
This will be their second time participating in the prestigious group of high school-aged musicians from all over California. The orchestra will rehearse and perform February 13 through 17 in Fresno.
