Sophomore Wins Scholarship to Summer Seminar at University of Michigan
Sophomore Ezugo Ononye has been awarded a full scholarship to the 2018 Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar at the University of Michigan.
The seminar is called African American Mobility and Travel Abroad: From Paul Cuffee to Ta-Nehisi Coates. This is a six-week-long educational program centered around a college-level seminar for gifted and highly motivated high school sophomores.
“I am so excited for this upcoming summer with TASS. As a young African American boy, I think it will be so impactful to learn about African American history and migration for the entire summer,” Ononye said.
Admission to TASS is highly selective. Teachers and advisors first nominate promising students. Then, after completing a rigorous application and submitting and academic recommendation and transcript, TASS finalists are selected from the group of applicants. Each candidate received a personal interview, after which the committee selects the scholarship recipients. Only 56 students nationwide are invited to participate in the seminar program.
“I have really grown in writing this year, so taking a course on writing will be a great opportunity for me to foster my writing skills, while building a new community with new mentors, friends and a new environment,” Ononye said. “This is going to be an awesome summer. Can't wait to be in Michigan!”
Ononye is currently a Student Ambassador at Sage Hill School, and is passionate and welcoming as he introduces Sage Hill to new community members.
“In all of his endeavors, Ezugo embodies Sage Hill’s mission and culture, and then infuses it with his own enthusiasm in order to further those ideals,” said Head of School Patricia Merz. “He is a committed and conscientious student who throws himself into all of his assignments. Ezugo brings a balance of sensitivity, encouragement and support to his fellow classmates.”
