Publications Staff Wins First-Place Awards for The Bolt, Storm
For the second year in a row, Sage Hill School’s Publications staff won first-place awards from the American Scholastic Press Association for both The Bolt student newspaper and the Storm yearbook.
The staff submitted the 2017 Storm yearbook, “Altitude and Attitude,” and the September and December issues of The Bolt for consideration.
“All the credit goes to the amazing group of students we have working in Publications,” said first-year advisor Kelly Parker, also the writer and website manager for Sage Hill. “I took over in the fall after their beloved former advisor Konnie Krislock retired, and honestly, these students have taught me just as much as I’ve taught them this year.”
ASPA is a national organization that rates and gives out awards to publications who enter from middle schools to colleges. When scoring, judges provide valuable feedback to the staff so the young journalists can improve upon their work in the future.
“It was very helpful to read the judges’ comments and scores so we could take a step back and see a little more objectively what our strengths and weaknesses are,” Parker said. “I think it has given us plenty to think about as we wrap up this year and start planning for next year.”
These awards mean a lot to the student journalists who work every X Block and some late nights after school to get the publications ready for print.
“Winning first place for The Bolt was a huge honor because this has been a transitional year for the Publications staff,” said junior Hannah Woodworth, co-editor in chief of The Bolt. “Receiving this award gave us momentum for next year and topped off all of our hard work.”
