TedX at Sage Hill is back, with this year’s theme of “Alternative Perspectives.”
On Friday, March 2, the TedX Team will present six speakers who all have “voices that share incredible insight into new takes on life, its mysteries, its course, and its possibilities.” The event will be from 7:00 to 10:00 PM in the Black Box Theater in the Studio at Sage Hill.
“We want to expose our community to new ideas that challenge the norm. In addition, we hope to encourage people to listen to each other and learn from the differing opinions expressed at the event,” junior Trevor Klein wrote in a blog post detailing the preparation and process for TedX.
This year’s speakers will be: Dan Levine, head of retail and brand development for Stance; Dr. Richard Garcia, a pediatrician in Stockton; Dr. Ali Rafatjoo, a family medicine doctor in Newport Beach; Kylie Schuyler, founder of Global G.L.O.W.; student speaker Jonathan Stark; and Wende Zomnir, co-founder and chief creative officer of Urban Decay.
TedX is a student-led Service Learning project comprised of 14 students and led by advisor Gordon McNeill, president of Sage Hill School. Each student has a role in the production, from co-president to executive producer to director of communications. The group has been working on TedX since the beginning of the school year. The students came up with the theme, brainstormed on speakers and worked on details in their designated jobs -- designing fliers, writing invitations, creating the website and more.
“I am continually amazed at the entrepreneurial spirit of our students here at Sage Hill. TEDx is one more way in which we are able to connect our students with the broader community and bring cutting-edge thinking back to our campus,” McNeill said. “It is especially rewarding for me to watch so many different students take on a leadership role in preparing for this event and making sure that it will be a resounding success.”
The inaugural TedX at Sage Hill took place in 2016. Since then, a dedicated group of students have worked to bring the program back to campus every year with interesting speakers such as Jim Abbott, a former MLB pitcher; Karina Hamilton, a founder of Sage Hill; Kelly King, an actress and model; Debra Miller, the co-founder of CureDuchenne; and more.
