Poet Makes History With Two Wins in Haiku Competition
Senior Cole Mitchell won two prizes in this year’s Nicholas A. Virgilio Memorial Haiku Competition, which is sponsored by the Haiku Society of America.
For the first time in the contest’s 27-history, one poet won two of the contest’s six prizes. Cole’s haiku were selected from the largest pool of entries ever -- more than 6,000, which was twice as many as last year. The competition is open to students in grades 7-12 from across the world.
Cole’s winning haiku will be published on the Haiku Society of America website and in Frogpond, the HSA’s quarterly journal. He will also receive prize money, and Sage Hill will get a one-year subscription to Frogpond.
