Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Visits Sage Hill January 12-14
Former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Natasha Trethewey will teach master classes and work on a performance of her work at Sage Hill from January 12-14. History and memory will collide in this theatrical staging of Trethewey's searing book of poetry, Native Guard, the Sage Hill 2016-2017 Book in Common. The book will be staged for the second time in a special West Coast premiere in the Studio at Sage Hill.

Native Guard juxtaposes the deeply personal experiences of Trethewey, a child of a then-illegal marriage between her black mother and white father living in 1960s Mississippi, with the experience of a soldier in the Native Guard, the first African-American Union troop in the Civil War, who was charged with guarding white Confederate captives. Years after her mother's tragic death, Trethewey reclaims her memory, just as she reclaims the voices of the black soldiers whose service has been all but forgotten.

Native Guard will be performed in collaboration with the Alliance Theatre, based in Atlanta. Alliance Theatre will be producing Trethewey’s poems and the Sage Hill presentation will serve as a workshop for their upcoming production in 2017. In addition, the performances will include poetry from the book performed by Broadway/TV/film actress January La Voy, who will be accompanied by a singer and an instrumental quartet.
