Sage Hill Faculty Publish Research in Several Journals
Research by our faculty was published in educational journals recently and highlights their unique expertise. “Sage Hill is fortunate to have distinguished faculty who are inspired by their work and love teaching and scholarship,” said Sage Hill Dean of Faculty Matt Balossi. “Our faculty help shape their respective fields while illuminating the world with their research and igniting discussion,” added Dr. Balossi.

Helping Students Return to the Classroom after a Concussion
Sage Hill Athletic Trainer Meaghan Beaudoin, and Sage Center Assistant Director for Global Outreach Bethany Pitassi, who is also a learning specialist, co-authored the article “Return-to-Learn Protocol: Supporting Students After A Concussion.” The article, which is published in the fall edition of Independent School Magazine focuses on how Sage Hill developed and is using a methodology to help students, who have suffered from a concussion, return to the classroom.

Throughout her career as an athletic trainer, Beaudoin has worked with numerous students and athletes who have had concussions; and, Pitassi has also worked with students post-concussion. “We believe it’s important to share our methodology with other schools to help students, families, teachers and administrations overcome the challenges faced when dealing with students who have this kind of injury,” said Beaudoin who holds her masters in kinesiology with an emphasis on athletic training. “We hope others can benefit from the success we’ve seen and learn from the challenges we’ve overcome.”

Up Close with Thin-Shelled Shrimp
In September, Sage Hill science teacher Todd Haney’s "Collecting and Processing Leptostracans” was published in the Journal of Crustacean Biology. Dr. Haney, along with co-author Joel Martin of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, discuss techniques for the collection of a type of crustacean called thin-shelled shrimp. The organisms, more formally referred to as leptostracans, are ubiquitous in the marine realm, occurring everywhere from our own coastal waters of California to deep-sea hydrothermal vents and coral reefs.

Dr. Haney has degrees in zoology and marine science, a doctorate in evolutionary biology from UCLA, and he has published numerous research papers in the field of taxonomy. "There are tens of thousands of striking, known forms of life that most people will never realize exist, and there are literally millions of species that scientists have yet to discover. In fact, some undescribed species are sitting on our classroom shelves at Sage Hill. I am hopeful that I can share even a glimpse of our planet's biodiversity with our students, both in the classroom and through authentic discovery research," he said. Dr. Haney teaches Biology, Scientific Research, and Human Anatomy and Physiology at Sage Hill this year.

Evaluating Teacher Quality at Independent Schools
Sage Hill’s Dr. Balossi co-authored the research article, “On Teacher Quality in Independent Schools” that was published in the Peabody Journal of Education in August. Here is an excerpt from the abstract of the article, “Independent schools pride themselves on providing a unique educational experience for students, one that is robust and mission-driven and capitalizes on lower student-to-teacher ratios that allow for more personalized learning and high-quality teachers. Numerous studies measure teacher effectiveness in public schools, yet there is little research on teacher quality in independent schools.” The research explores how independent schools describe high quality teachers, the practices schools used for identifying and recruiting these types of teachers, as well as practices to evaluate teachers.
