Last May’s Spring at Sage 2016 trip to Ecuador helped Sage Hill students explore and understand Ecuador and its ecological treasures. However, the trip also brought much needed supplies to a school system in Calceta, Ecuador that was impacted by the April 16 magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
The powerful earthquake destroyed many communities, caused hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. To help those in need, supplies were donated by Sage Hill families, students, faculty and staff and included toiletries, bug repellent, batteries, bed sheets and small blankets. The supplies were packed up and brought to Ecuador during Spring at Sage.
Earlier this month the president of the Tomás Moro School in Quito, who helped facilitate the entire operation, sent a heartfelt thank you letter to the Sage Hill community for their generous and thoughtful donations. The Ecuadorian school president noted the help of Sage Hill junior Madeline Sharp, world language instructors Diego Izurieta, Sally Sefami, and Thomas Smith as well as science instructor Tyler Zarubin. Both Zarubin and Sefami traveled to Ecuador for this year’s Spring at Sage.
