Sage Hill Athletic Teams Win Big
What a week for Sage Hill Lightning Athletics! Records were broken, amazing sportsmanship was demonstrated, and two teams made history with back-to-back Academy League championships.

“It’s impressive to see our student athletes break school records and represent Sage Hill with such extraordinary sportsmanship, success and enthusiasm,” said Sage Hill Athletic Director Megan Cid. “Their dedication and commitment is truly exceptional especially when they are also putting in so much effort studying for finals.”

Let’s take a look at what happened this past week:

Baseball
Sage Hill Boys’ Varsity Baseball is Academy League Champion after defeating Crean Lutheran 5-4 last Friday, May 6. Click here to read the Daily Pilot article for details.

“Playoff baseball is always exciting," said Sage Hill Varsity Baseball Coach Dominic Campeau. "Our student athletes do a great job of balancing studying for final exams, participating in Spring at Sage, getting ready for graduation, and playing CIF baseball. It is crucial for them to stay focused while managing their time well. They are doing a phenomenal job.” 

The team will play a non-league game this week and they expect to play in the first round of CIF playoffs on Thursday, May 19. Time and location to be determined. 

Swimming
The Boys’ Swim team is back-to-back Academy League Champions and Girls' Swim finished strong in 4th place last Thursday, May 5. Harry Miller, Taras Polakoff, Ethan Vovan and Jason Schreiber all set Sage Hill School and Academy League records. This boys’ relay team smashed the Sage Hill School and Academy League record in the 200m Medley Relay.

Other school records broken:

  • Harry Miller - 50m Freestyle
  • Taras Polakoff - 100m Backstroke (also broke Academy League record) and 100m Freestyle
  •  Harry Miller and Taras Polakoff - Named Co-MVPs of the Academy League Championships

Both Schreiber and Polakoff have qualified to swim at the upcoming CIF Division 2 Championship meet in their respective individual events. Sophomore Zane Drobenko won the 500m Freestyle at the Academy League Championship Meet as well as coming in second in a dramatic photo finish in the 200m Freestyle finals.

Track & Field
Members of the Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field team will travel north this Saturday, May 14, to Carpinteria High School to compete in the CIF-Southern Section Preliminaries. Competitors qualified based on last Thursday’s Academy League Finals where the Boys’ team placed second overall and the girls’ were fifth.

Academy League Champions are:

  • Alex Escalara - Pole vault
  • DJ Henry, Chance Kuehnel, Miles McCord, Nima Nakhjavani - 4x100m Relay
  • DJ Henry, Miles McCord, Nima Nakhjavani, Jack Renton, - 4x400m Relay
  • Chance Kuehnel - Long Jump (new school record), high jump, 110m high hurdles
  • Miles McCord - 400m
  • Kurisa Suhr - 400m
Also advancing to CIF Preliminaries are the following:
  • Ashton Carroll (800m)
  • Alex Escalara (Long jump)
  • DJ Henry (100m)
  • Miles McCord (Long jump)
  • Nima Nakhjavani (100m & 200m),
  • Jack Renton (400m)
  • Alice Warden (Long jump)
Boys’ Tennis
On May 5, members of the Boys’ Varsity Tennis Team competed in the Academy League Finals Singles Tournament. Sage Hill placed second, third, and fourth.

  • Adam Langevin – Second (moves onto CIF SS Individual Championships in Singles Tennis)
  • Emin Torlic – Third
  • Steven Ferry – Fourth
This week, the team will compete in the first round of CIF-SS playoffs against Dana Hills High School on Wednesday, May 11, 3 PM, at the Tennis Center at Sage Hill.

Boys’ Volleyball
Boys’ Volleyball won Saturday’s wild card match and now move to the first round of CIF-SS playoffs on Tuesday, May 10, 7 PM, at Saddleback Valley Christian in San Juan Capistrano.

The team won Saturday’s game with the following players having exceptional plays:
  • Parker Warden - 11 kills , 3 blocks
  • Albert Son- 10 kills, 2 Aces
  • Josh Lee - 6 kills, 2 blocks
  • Shane Larimer - 5 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces, 37 assists
