Inaugural Multicultural Symposium April 8

Inaugural Multicultural Symposium April 8
A student-led service learning project blossomed into Sage Hill’s first Multicultural Symposium called “Jump In!” scheduled for Friday, April 8, 9:00 AM - 3:40 PM. The event will explore multicultural issues through presentations and workshops led by Sage Hill students, faculty and community members.

“Multiculturalism has a major impact on education,” said Sage Hill Diversity Coordinator Mindy Aguirre. “Exploring and understanding gender, ability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, equity and justice help us build culturally competent students, faculty and staff who are then passionate about making positive changes worldwide,” she added. The event is led by Sage Hill students: Erika Garcia, Janis Jin, Amanda Ong, Anna Paz, Maru Sefami and Lauren Thunen who were inspired to create the event after attending a similar one last year, according to Aguirre.

The Symposium will begin with a special session for Sage Hill parents from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM in the Le Bon Family Lobby in the Studio at Sage Hill. This special session features keynote speaker, Alison Park, who will present “Talking to Kids about Identity.” Park founded Blink Consulting, a Bay Area-based firm specializing in helping schools and other organizations optimize their diversity initiatives.

At 10:50 AM, Park will present at the all-school assembly. Sage Hill parents are also welcome to attend the assembly. The Symposium continues in the afternoon for afternoon sessions running from 1:45 PM – 2:25 PM; and 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM. Topics include: sexual orientation, ability/disability, gender, socioeconomic status, privilege, cultural appropriation, social justice, inclusivity, and more. Click here for a description of workshop topics. The conference concludes with a closing ceremony at 3:20 PM. Please note: Sage Hill students will not have Conference on April 8 due the symposium running through X Block.
