Broadway, Film Actors Bring The Mountaintop to Life at Sage Hill
The Studio at Sage Hill’s Professional Performance Series continues on January 5 and January 6 by bringing Martin Luther King Jr.’s last night to life. Sage Hill theater instructor Mary Robinson will direct a vibrant and compelling staged reading of The Mountaintop. The play is a “bold reimagining of an American icon” say critics.
“Staged readings are a terrific way for our students to be exposed to award-winning plays with professional actors who are working through the creative process live in our studio at Sage Hill,” said Robinson. “It’s a learning experience that I wouldn’t want our students to miss,” added Robinson.
Two guest artists will join Sage Hill for the staged readings. Albert Jones, a Broadway, film and television actor based in New York City will portray Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jones’ film and TV credits include House of Cards, The Affair, The Following, The Bourne Ultimatum and many others. Sophina Brown is a film, television and theater actress who will portray Camae, a hotel maid. She is currently on Scream: The TV Series, as Detective Lorraine Brock. Her other credits include: NCIS, Bones, The Good Wife, Without a Trace, and many others.
The Mountaintop is a two-person drama that unfolds on the last night of King’s life and is set in the Lorraine hotel in room 306, the evening before his assassination. King is alone, trying to create yet another powerful speech, when he orders a cup of coffee from room service and a mysterious young maid delivers it. What follows is a reflective, often funny, and touching conversation. The Mountaintop explores being human in the face of inevitable death.
