Emmy Award-Winning Choreographer Inspires Sage Hill Students
Choreographer Bonnie Story, winner of an Emmy Award for her work on the movie “High School Musical,” taught a master class Friday, October 23 at Sage Hill. Story served as a co-choreographer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, was featured on the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance,” and has worked as a performer in numerous videos, commercials and films.
Every school year, the Producers Circle and the Studio at Sage Hill bring award-winning performers to the School to teach master classes and work hands-on with the students. “I think it is important to have dance professionals come to Sage Hill to inspire the students to dream big,” said Sage Hill dance instructor Noelle Robinson. “It also exposes them to new ideas and concepts that may resonate with them in their work as a performing artist,” she explained.
Story taught a thorough warm-up to students, helped them sharpen basic dance skills, and showed them the importance of dancing with intent and purpose. She asked them to perform an acting exercise, explaining to the students that being a dancer is also being an actor. Dancers must tell a story when they dance to portray an emotion or a character through their movement. Her class ended with a question and answer session.
Story attended Julliard and the School of American Ballet. She danced in several ballet companies as a principal dancer before moving to Los Angeles to work in television and film. She enjoys giving back to the community and throughout her career has continued to study, perform, teach, assist, and choreograph.
