Science Olympiad Team Plans for Intense Competition at Regional Event
The Sage Hill Science Olympiad Team is recruiting new team members and is looking for students who love all things science – chemistry, biology, geology, physics, engineering, and more. Sage Hill will field a team to compete against 40 high schools at the Orange County Regional Science Olympiad Competition held on March 5, 2016 at the University of California, Irvine. Supervising the team are Sage Hill Science Department Chairman and science instructor, Kerry Langdale along with science instructor Todd Haney. The Sage Hill team comprises mostly freshmen and sophomores.
“We’re looking forward to a great year and giving a lot of our students, who are passionate about science, an opportunity to explore and compete in a team-like environment,” said Langdale. Any student can try out for the team and should be prepared to commit to practices after school and during some weekends.
Various fields of science will be represented during the competition and the Sage Hill team must tackle 23 events, such as building a bridge that’s both light and efficient enough to hold a bucket of sand without breaking, or competing in the popular science quiz bowl. Other events include: performing a chemistry lab, designing a device capable of launching projectiles into a target, assembling a wind-powered pinwheel/propeller-like system, creating a robotic arm, building an electric vehicle, taking tests about invasive species, and demonstrating knowledge of geologic mapping as well as human anatomy.
